After travelling overseas for 3 years, Kevin & Lynda returned to South Africa in 2002 with the idea of opening a backpackers. They decided to settle in the Western Cape and eventually found the friendly town of Robertson. Nestled between the Langeberg Mountains and the Breede River, the town and surrounds are well known for olive farms and superb wine estates which can all be visited. There was plenty to do in the valley and this made a fantastic place to open up a backpackers. The house they bought was an old Victorian farm house, dating back to the 1880's. It is spacious and there are plenty of communal areas, so it never feels crowded. A lot of care has been taken to make your stay as enjoyable as possible. and all the beds have comfortable duvets and pillows. The lush garden with stunning mountain views, comes alive at night with intimate lamps and lanterns. Guests are welcome to use the well equipped kitchen or use the communal braai. The Moroccan room with an indoor fireplace & bar has a certain bohemian feel about it. It is a great place to have a drink, smoke a Shisha and listen to cool African tunes. In 2010 two garden en-suites were built with their own veranda & sky-light shower. Only a two hour drive away from Cape Town and with lots to do in the area you will want to stay longer. The Backpackers Rated one of the best in the Western Cape by the Rough Guide. So if you want to get away from the rat-race or indulge in some country activities, then this is the place to be. The original home that is now the Backpackers was built in the 1880's, about 30 years after the town of Robertson was first established & about 15 years before the start of the Anglo Boer war. The home was built during the time when the town was considered extremely prosperous. It is built in a Victorian Style and was typical of the type of modest farmsteads in the area consisting of 4 rooms. The toilets would have been outside & the bathing would have been done in the kitchen around the fire, which is now the TV room. These photos were taken in 2003 & is what the place looked like when we bought it. The garage on the left has now been turned into the Moroccan Room.
